What's an ADU?

An Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU), aka: Granny Unit, In-Law Unit, or Cottage is a secondary dwelling unit on your property that can be rented out as livable space or can be used as a home office, a guest-house for family and friends to stay, or simply a studio space. Many cities and counties have rules regarding short-term rentals, and regulations regarding size/heights/bedrooms, so be sure to check with your local building department or jurisdiction to see what the laws are regarding ADU rentals for your area. ADU Marin provides a free consultation and feasibility research regarding your property and is a good resource to start the process of investigating the possibility of an ADU on your property. https://adumarin.org/standards

Once your property is deemed feasible for an ADU, we can take a look at your site conditions to determine the best location and size for your ADU. After determining your needs and wants for the design, we can lay out a preliminary floor plan and develop conceptual renderings to see what makes the most sense for the location. After the design is agreed upon, we can begin the construction document process and submit for permits. In general, for most jurisdictions in Marin County, this process can take anywhere from 3-6 months.
